Dr. Martens One of the most respected and well-know icons in the world, Dr. footwear continue to set the standard for durability, comfort and fashion. Dr. Martens' trademark look and quality construction has been recognized world-wide since 1960. Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began in Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens, an orthopedist, injured his foot during a skiing accident. To facilitate walking during the healing process he designed a shoe with an air cushioned sole. He brought the idea to an old college friend Dr Herbert Funck and they began to develop the idea further and before long the first heat-sealed air-cushioned sole was developed. By the late 50s the Dr.Marten shoe was selling well under the name of Dr Maertens in Germany but the two doctors wanted to explore new markets and placed ads in trade magazines. One of which was spotted by Bill Griggs whose Northamptonshire based company: R Griggs & Co, was open to something a bit different. The global rights to the air-cushioned sole were secured and the company went to work on developing a range of footwear that would feature the air cushioned sole. Features such as the yellow stitching and the pattern on the sole were also designed. The first of April in 1960 marks the birth of an icon, which is the date that the first pair of Dr. Martens 1460 boots walked off the production line. These boots are even named after the date the first pair were produced; 1st 4th 1960. These Dr. Martens boots are durable, simple and tough and they became the main stay of the working classes. The 1460 boots were later adopted by the youth as a symbol of self expression, Dr. Martens has grown from its humble origins to a brand that would create a definitive cultural footprint decade after decade. The classic 1460s went on to decorate some of the most celebrated feet in the music industry and the world in general. Now more than forty years later, a continuous succession of cultural renegades have adopted the 1460 as a sign of their independence, uniqueness and individuality. In the late 70s young people suddenly adopted Doc Martens sensible laced up shoes as a fashion accessory to the delight of podiatrists everywhere. Doc Martens have become legendary shoes - with good reason. Dr. Martens shoes and boots are incredibly comfortable and totaly hip. Whether you're a guy who needs a durable and comfortable shoe, or guy who just loves to make a fashion statement, you'll definitely find a shoe you love in our selection of large size Dr. Martens casual shoes. Kenneth Cole New York The story of Kenneth Cole in his own words: Nineteen years ago, I wanted to open a shoe company with limited money. From experience I knew one had to get in quickly because so often new companies run out of cash flow before they get the chance to conduct business. I also knew it was easier to get credit from factories in Europe who needed the business than from American banks that didn't. So I lined up the factories, went to Europe, designed a collection of shoes, and returned to the states to sell them. At the time, a shoe company had two options. You could get a room at the Hilton and become 1 of about 1100 shoe companies selling their goods. This didn't provide the identity or image I felt necessary for a new company, and it cost a lot more money than I had to spend. The other way was to do what the big companies do and get a fancy showroom in Midtown Manhattan not far from the Hilton. More identity, much more money too. I had an idea. I called a friend in the trucking business and asked to borrow one of his trucks to park in Midtown Manhattan. He said sure, but good luck getting permission. I went to the Mayor's office, Koch at the time, and asked how one gets permission to park a 40 foot trailer truck in Midtown Manhattan. He said one doesn't. The only people the city gives parking permits to are production companies shooting full length motion pictures and utility companies like Con Ed or AT&T. So that day I went to the stationery store and changed our company letterhead from Kenneth Cole, Inc. to Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. and the next day I applied for a permit to shoot a full length film entitled "The Birth of a Shoe Company." With Kenneth Cole Productions painted on the side of the truck, we parked at 1370 6th Avenue, across from the New York Hilton, the day of shoe show. We opened for business with a fully furnished 40 ft trailer, a director (Sometimes there was film in the camera, sometimes there wasn't), models as actresses, and two of New York's finest, compliments of Mayor Koch, as our doormen. We sold 40 thousand pairs of shoes in two and a half days (the entire available production) and we were off and running. To this day the company is still named Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. and serves as a reminder to the importance of resourcefulness and innovative problem solving. Kenneth Cole Reaction Reaction by Kenneth Cole - high quality shoes for men. From truly hip to very casual, Reaction Kenneth Cole shoes are made in a variety of modern styles and offer the man looking for a big size shoe plenty of choices to make their feet happy. New Balance The story of New Balance begins at the dawn of the 20th century in Boston, Massachusetts when William J. Riley, a 33-year-old English immigrant, committed himself to helping people with problem feet by making arch supports and prescription footwear to improve shoe fit. In 1934, Mr. Riley went into partnership with his leading salesman, Arthur Hall, who was highly successful selling arch supports to "policemen and other folks who were on their feet all day." In 1954, Arthur Hall sold the business to his daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and Paul Kidd. Arch supports and prescription footwear remained the cornerstone of their business until 1961 when they manufactured The Trackster, the world's first performance running shoe made with a ripple sole and available in multiple widths. The Trackster soon became the shoe of choice for college running coaches and YMCA fitness directors. During the 1960s, New Balance's reputation for manufacturing innovative performance footwear available in multiple widths grew through word of mouth and grassroots promotions. When Jim Davis bought the company from the Kidds on the day of the Boston Marathon in 1972, he committed himself to uphold the company's founding values of fit, performance, and manufacturing. When Anne Davis began her journey with New Balance in 1978, her focus became building a superior culture for NB associates and those who do business with the company around the globe. Together, Anne and Jim lead New Balance with fidelity on its mission to become the world's leading manufacturer of high performance footwear and apparel. For men looking for a big size shoe up to size 20, New Balance is a good choice for both size and width. Thorlo Benefits of Thorlo Socks: If you were able to walk barefooted on grass or gentle terrain all the time, you would not need Thorlos. But since most of us walk on man-made surfaces -- concrete, asphalt, hard floors [and let's not forget that man-made surface called the shoe or boot] -- we need protection from those surfaces. Inside the shoe or boot, the foot must move dynamically within a limited range in order for you to walk or run effectively. During all moving activities the foot is subjected to three main forces: Pressure, impact and shearing force. These three forces are responsible for virtually all the damage your foot incurs during standing, walking, running, and other sports and activities that involve bodily movement. In addition, the movement of the feet in moderate and strenuous activities generates perspiration. In fact, during strenuous activities, the feet can produce about 2 pints of sweat in a day . Too much moisture inside the shoe is not healthy for the feet. Moisture that is not evacuated from the shoe provides an environment in which bacteria and fungus can grow, and compounds the effect of the three damaging forces on the feet - pressure, impact and shearing force. Thus, it is critical to control moisture inside the shoe. Pressure is simply direct force applied to the surface of the feet when you place your weight on them. When standing still, this pressure is static, with about ½ your body weight placed on each foot. Impact is the sudden and forceful contact between the foot and the surface during walking, running and other sports and activities. It is, in effect, 'dynamic pressure,' and it increases the potential for damage to your feet: When you walk, each foot absorbs an impact of approximately 1-1/2 times your body weight. When you run, each foot absorbs approximately 3 to 4 times your body weight. This means that a person weighing 150 pounds would put an impact force of 225 pounds on his or her feet with each walking step, and 450 to 600 pounds on his or her feet with each running step. You can imagine the toll that takes on your feet over the course of a lifetime! Shearing Force is the movement of different layers of tissue in opposite directions. It occurs when your foot moves inside the shoe or boot, and it causes blistering and breakdown of the tissues in the foot if not controlled or diminished in some way. The Thorlos anatomically designed, patented terry padding protects your feet from these forces. The padding reduces static pressure and impact, and diminishes shearing forces through what we call the 'Control•Slide®' phenomenon . This means that instead of the tissues on your feet moving in opposite directions, the terry padding moves under your feet, transferring the movement from the tissues of the foot to the terry padding itself. And to ensure that your feet are protected from the adverse effects of accumulated perspiration inside the shoe, s urface moisture and water vapor are effectively channeled to the outside of the foot where they can be evacuated through the shoes. This is accomplished with the Thorlos proprietary yarn combinations that include THOR•LON® Acrylic, CoolMax® and other high tech fibers that 'wick' moisture away from the foot. This combination of moisture management and the reduction of pressure, impact and shearing forces reduces fatigue, and helps you to enjoy your sport or activity longer, with the confidence that your feet are protected by the best foot gear available today. ONLY Thorlos have peer-reviewed, published medical studies that confirm these benefits of pressure, impact and shearing reduction , as well as a study that shows the benefit of enhanced circulation in the lower extremities from wearing Thorlos. The knowledge gained from these and other medical studies , as well as anecdotal evidence collected over more than 20 years , has been combined in THOR•LO Comfort•Science®. Our experiences have led us to identify 7 elements of comfort: Moisture, Pressure, Shear, Circulation, Temperature, Posture and Stimulus. The understanding of how these 7 elements combine and interact is incorporated into our design and development processes, and it allows us to produce the ultimate in foot protection and comfort for you. Timberland The Timberland story began in 1918, in a small Boston, Massachusetts shoe company where Timberland founder, Nathan Swartz, began his bootmaking career as an apprentice stitcher. With his own hands, he cut leather, stitched seams, attached soles and learned how to craft fine leather boots. In 1952, he bought half an interest in The Abington Shoe Company. Three years later, he bought the remaining interest and welcomed his sons into the company. Together, they made shoes for leading manufacturers for nearly 10 years. In the '60s, waterproof leather boots as we know them didn't really exist. The Swartz family helped change all that by introducing injection-molding technology to the footwear industry. This technology fused soles to leather uppers without stitching, producing one of the first truly waterproof boots. In 1973, the Timberland name was born. "Timberland" started as the brand name for our original waterproof leather boot. Then, because the boot was so popular, the company name was officially changed to The Timberland Company. In 1978 and 1979, Timberland added casual and boat shoes to its line to become more than just a boot company. UGG UGG Australia is the world's premier luxury brand of authentic sheepskin footwear. They remain the leader in quality, innovation, and style. UGG Australia uses only the highest quality, grad “A” sheepskins, evident in the plush fleece and smooth leathers found in their slippers, shoes and boots. The sheepskin is naturally thermostatic and therefore, will keep bare feet comfy in temperatures as low as -30 F to as high as 80 F. UGG Australia footwear is designed to be worn barefoot to maximize the benefits of the sheepskin, the fit should be snug, but not uncomfortable as fleece footbeds form to each individual foot. UGG Australia sheepskin wicks moisture away and allows air to circulate, keeping feet dry. Big Shoes offers UGG slippers for men in size 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17. We also carry select styles such as the UGG classic short boot and UGG clogs. UGG Slippers We are proud to offer UGG men’s slippers in large sizes. They are the ultimate in comfort and style - once you slide your feet into these cozy slippers, you won't ever want to step out of them. UGG Boots UGG boots are great casual boots. UGG boots are exceptionally warm and are great for cold weather (up to -30 degrees Fahrenheit) - however, they should not be worn in excessively muddy or wet conditions. If you are looking for warmth while trudging around the house or the city, a sheepskin or UGG boot will be ideal, but if you need a boot for more sever winter weather conditions, you might want to try a snow boot instead. For guys, UGG boots look great with jeans, and give a very casual, or rugged look. The warmth of your UGG boot means the boot can be worn without socks, even in some of the coldest conditions. How to Care for UGG Boots, Slippers and Footwear Sheepskin is naturally water resistant and therefore small amounts of moisture will not seep through or damage it. For further protection, treat products with UGG Austrailia Stain and Water Repellant. Hand wash your UGG slippers or boots. DO NOT use a washing machine. Moisten sheepskin footwear with clean cold water, hot water can damage the boots. Dilute Cleaner & Conditioner to a wet sponge. Do not apply the Cleaner & Conditioner directly on to footwear. Gently scrub to clean entire area. Sheepskin has a delicate surface which can be damaged if scrubbed aggressively or with undiluted concentration. Rinse clean in clean, cold water and allow to dry naturally and slowly. Do not dry in direct heat such as your clothes dryer or sunlight. Instead, stuff the sheepskin or UGG boots with paper towels, and let them dry naturally, away from heat. The towels will help the boots to keep their shape. Once footwear is dry, lightly brush with a very soft suede/nubuck brush in one direction only. UGG Outreach You can be assured that your UGG Australia luxury sheepskin products are purely made by environmentally friendly means. All of our boot, shoe, and slipper uppers are made of 100% carded wool, which is 100% renewable. Many of our outsoles are made from 50% consumer recycled rubber as well. With Microban we have developed a zinc based anti microbial, which is inert and safe for the environment, and we continue to move towards implementation of using water-based cements for the assembly of our footwear, and soy-based inks for our printed boxes. In our continued efforts we will continue our progressive environmental policies to make even greater leaps and bounds. UGG Australia believes in the furthering of such progressive business practices, and encourages other businesses to also take such measures. |
